Is LAS Estrogenic ?

Neither LAS nor its metabolites, SPC, proved to be estrogenic (Routledge E.J. et.al. Env.Tox.Chem., 1996, 15, 241)

Is LAS safe for humans ?
LAS is :

Rapidly and Completely excreted following single oral dose.

Not substantially absorbed (<0.01%) percutaneously by humans.

Not Classified as CMT (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, Teratogenic) (Environmental & Human Safety of Major Surfactants. The Soap & Detergent Association - New York 1991).

“The average daily intake of LAS by the general population, on the basis of limited estimates of exposure via drinking water, utensils, and food, is probably much lower (about three orders of magnitude) than the levels shown to induce minor effects in experimental animals”
(Linear Alkylbenzene Sulfonates and Related Compounds. - Environmental Health Criteria. IPCS Report 169. WHO Geneva (CH), 1996)

Other facts on the safety of commercial LAS include :

Human skin can tolerate contact with solutions of up to 1% LAS for 24 hrs. with only mild irritation effects.

No skin sensitisation detected.

No serious injuries reported following accidental ingestion of LAS containing preparations.

Is LAS biodegradable ?

Yes commercial LAS and its sub-components are rapidly and completely biodegradable. For more information please follow this link.

Has the environmental impact of LAS been studied ?

Research on LAS has been conducted for over 30 years and continues until today. LAS is probably one of the most researched commercial chemicals. An extensive array of research papers has been published. For more information please click here.

Have there been any environmental studies on LAS done in Asia ?

Yes there have been studies conducted in Thailand and Japan. For more information please click here.
